This week’s Torah portion is Chayei Sarah. We are going to study it almost exclusively with a single commentator – Rav Shlomo Wolbe, among the leaders of the Musar Movement. The focus of this movement, which began in Lithuania in the 19th century, was self-improvement through refinement of one’s character. While at the University of Berlin, the young Wolbe became religiously observant and would go on to learn at the Mir Yeshiva in Belarus. While there, he would derive inspiration from Rav Yerucham Levovitz, the legendary mashgiach ruchani, or spiritual advisor, at the yeshiva.
