After the opening of the book of Exodus last week, with the parasha of Shemot, we are reading the second parasha in Exodus, Va’eira. At first glance, it looks like what happens next will be very simple. After many years of slavery in Egypt, the time has come. G-d is all-powerful so he can easily take the people out of Egypt. פרשת השבוע היא פרשת "ויגש", ונשלים קצת גם את פרשת "מקץ" שבה לא נפגשנו בגלל חנוכה. פרשת "ויגש" היא במובן מסוים סיום של ספר בראשית, המעגל הגדול נסגר, יוסף והאחים מתאחדים ואז יוסף ואביו מתאחדים. שוב ושוב אנחנו רואים שהתורה היא מלשון הוראה, מטרתה להורות, זה לא ספר מתח, לא טלנובלה, לא סרט. אחרת היו בונים את העלילה אחרת לגמרי, אבל כאן העלילה היא לא העיקר אלא מה שלומדים ממנה

5780-09-Parashat VaYigash

Perhaps this is the “main course″ in the story of Yosef:  the way Yosef reassures his brothers.  They do not apologize to him but, instead, he reassures them.  Here, psychology can help us understand what Yosef is doing and two psychological terms will come to our assistance: “emotional intelligence″ and “reframing.″  These two terms perfectly explain what happens in the parasha. So what is the process that Yosef must undergo?

This week’s Torah portion is Vayeshev and the comments of Rav Neriah are especially pertinent: “Since we already heard the Torah portions of Yosef’s story in the past, we cannot learn and absorb them as we would if we were hearing them for the first time. We know the end of the story, and so the tragic tale of the sale of Yosef by his brothers is not shocking. But we need to learn every parasha anew in order to experience what happens as if we were there, to feel what Yaakov and his sons felt as the story actually unfolded, and then we will see the entire parasha in a different light and with a deeper understanding.″
